We Have Arrived in Boston
A Full Bittersweet week and our first appointment at Boston Children's Hospital.
We have arrived in Boston!
It’s now day 6 of living in Boston. This past week has been a full week, it has been a bittersweet time of leaving one home and amazing church family and arriving in yet another home and amazing church family. On both sides we had so many wonderful church members help us pack and some to help unpack, some to say goodbye and some to say welcome. We are so grateful for the love we have received from so many!

Brittany and the kids flew to Boston with the help of Bob, her dad, while I drove up, along with two friends, Joe and Mike, in the U-Haul packed full of our stuff.

Boston:

First round of appointments at Boston Children’s Hospital
It was a looooong first day of appointments at Boston Children's and we're overwhelmed with gratefulness for the staff and care we received.
They all agree it's likely Kaleb has some kind of genetic syndrome that's causing all of his issues. They're encouraged to see that he's gotten this far with his heart as it is and hasn't shown any signs of his health deteriorating in the womb. Our cardiologist said the particular malformation Kaleb has in his heart (both of his valves have only partially formed) is very tricky to operate on at the newborn stage (like trying to sew together a wet tissue), even in the best of cases. and since Kaleb has other possible health complications, they will need to consider after he's born if surgery would be the best option for his care.
Once Kaleb is born more stress will be put on his heart in general because it will need to take over what the placenta did, but it will also relieve some stress from the right side of his heart (where there is currently a lot of stress and leakage) while his left side will begin to work harder. So, it may help Kaleb out, there's a chance that after he's born his body figures out what it's doing and he's able to sustain himself until his body is ready for the heart surgery. On the other side of the spectrum, it's possible that his heart won't be able to sustain him and surgery wouldn't be a plausible option, in which case we would focus on spending quality time with him for however long God gives us with him.
After cardiology, our meeting with Dr. Wilkins-Haug and the fetal care team was so encouraging. Dr. Wilkins is very open to me delivering naturally, so long as Kaleb is doing well.
Kassie, our social worker, has assured us there's a wealth of resources at the hospital for whatever lies on the other side of birth. She even said they would love to have the kids visit Kaleb, if we'd like that.
So many answered prayers. So much to process. And so much grace.
