The Daily Kaleb

Update 8

“When Christ delays to help His saints now, you think this is a great mystery, you cannot explain it; but Jesus sees the end from the beginning.  Be still, and know that Christ is God.”

Robert Murray M’Chyene

Thank you all for your continued prayers!

Yesterday was a no go for the heart cath procedure. Kaleb was third in line, the two procedures before him were actual technical procedures (like putting in a stent) that took much longer than anticipated.

We trust the Lord’s timing, the Creator and Sustainer of time knows best, it is for our good and for His glory.

Small Gifts of Grace

In the late afternoon, while I was waiting for the call to go to the Cath Lab, an unexpected visit from the IV team popped in. They came by to see if they could find a vein for a central line IV (PICC line). Just two days prior they thought it wouldn’t be possible anytime soon–given the state of his veins–but today they were already on Kaleb’s floor so they thought why not check again. This wonderful highly skilled IV nurse found a vein in him right away that would work and they acted on it. His doctor and nurses at the time were all amazed they found a line and how well it went!

Right as we were getting ready to leave Kaleb’s nurse and the respiratory team were cleaning up his ventilator lines when they said “If you can stay for a few extra minutes, we are going to take the tape off his face.” This allowed us to see his face without the tape for the first time since he was born. The nurse could have chosen to stay focused on completing the task at hand quickly, but instead chose to slow things down so that we could have that moment to see Kaleb’s face.

We know it is the Lord our God who has gone before us to provide these gifts!

Cardiologist Update

The lead cardiologist came by at the end of the day to give an update and mentioned it’s been Kaleb’s best day yet.

  • His vitals are hardly fluctuating, they continue to stabilize more and more.

  • It seems his left and right ventricles are also starting to equalize in pressure (from the ultrasound reports). This could be an indicator that his lungs are opening up more, becoming less restrictive. It’s possible his lungs are just much slower to adjusting and developing post-birth than a typical newborn.

The plan is still to get him in for the heart cath procedure hopefully first thing Monday morning. Then at some point in the week the different teams will meet and discuss the findings and put together a bigger plan.

God’s Strength Promised in our Weakness

I recently recalled Paul asking God three times for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed and yet God did not give him any response that it would be removed. Paul perhaps in his own desires and wisdom cried out to the Lord thinking it would be best to be removed. Yet, the answer, the promise he was given from the Lord was “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Brittany and I are experiencing the weight of our weakness like never before, yet it is through our weakness, our waiting, our pleading we are becoming more acquainted with how sweet and unwavering his sustaining grace is towards His children. Even in the moments of what seems like delays or silence to our prayers we are leaning into His promise of sustaining grace and watching how He leads the way.
