The Daily Kaleb

Update #21: Day 2 Post Chest Closure

Good morning,

Now that the dust has settled from our wonderful two weeks of back-to-back out-of-town visitors, we are happily settling back into normal rhythms of life.

The doctors and nurses have been encouraged by small steps of progress he is making. His heart still has a ways to go as far as improving post surgery, but Kaleb is slowly heading in the right direction.

In the wee hours of the morning yesterday they started weaning him off of his paralytic (muscle relaxers) and we couldn't wait to watch him start squirming and moving around. Todd and I were able to visit Kaleb at the hospital yesterday afternoon (thanks to the generosity of a friend at church who watched the kids!). While we were there Kaleb was slowly beginning to move his hands and feet, he even gripped my finger point at one point, which was so special.

Mike, the nurse from a couple weeks ago, makes regular visits to Kaleb's room to see how he's doing and chat with us if we're around. Yesterday he spent 30 minutes chatting with us. He’s becoming a sweet acquaintance. Please pray for wisdom and boldness to share the gospel of Christ with Mike.

Kaleb looks older every day, which makes us aware of how much time is passing as we wait for his body to recover from surgery and find its path forward to stability. But we know our good God continues to watch over our son, even as we are limited in what we can do for him. And we hope and pray and anticipate the day we will be able to bring him to his home! Which at this point they estimate between one and two months from now.

Pray

  1. For the severe dysfunction in his left and right ventricle, at this point they are more concerned with the depression and weakness of the left ventricle.

  2. The leakage to reduce in his valves that were repaired

  3. That he adjusts smoothly to reducing his sedation

Now that we have sailed through the most difficult course (so far) with Kaleb, we will only be posting The Daily Kaleb every other day or as needed.

Love,
The Born Family
