The Daily Kaleb

Update #26: "Very Impressed on how well he is doing"

Over the past several days Kaleb has been doing exceptionally well in his transitions from the ventilator and weaning off sedation.

Following a very rough initial transition from breathing tube to biPAP mask and experiencing rough withdrawal from sedation medication Brittany went in last Friday morning to visit with Kaleb. Before even seeing him, his nurse Lynn, greeted her with, “WELL. Kaleb had a VERY big morning.”

Zion and River love visiting their baby brother!

Unsure whether that was good or bad news, she inquired to know more. And found they had removed his chest tube (the drainage site post surgery), taken him off his antibiotics, turned off his pacemaker, and switched him from the awful biPAP mask to a high pressure nasal cannula allowing him to be MUCH more comfortable.
Then to top it all off, Brittany was able to hold him and he took to a pacifier very well. It’s just been a lot smoother sailing since then.

  • He’s hit his max feeding goal with breastmilk with no apparent issues.

  • They’re down to 1.2ml of his last remaining sedative.

  • He’s off his blood pressure medicine (milronin) and they’re monitoring him closely to see how he does with that. They plan to transition him to an oral med in preparation for him coming home.

  • He’s since transitioned to low pressure nasal cannula at 50%. They hope to transition him completely off of oxygen in the coming days.

  • The results from his most recent echo of his heart came back with no considerable changes in his heart (which is a good thing).

  • He is still has an arrhythmia but it comes and goes less frequently

  • The surgeons came to look at him this morning and said they were “very impressed with his progress.”

What can we say? God is gracious. He has heard our pleas for mercy and before we could even realize it we are suddenly talking about what steps we need to take in preparation for bringing him home. Amazing!!

Pray

  • For Kaleb’s lungs to strengthen so that he can transition completely off of oxygen

  • For his heart to continue to heal and NOT deteriorate

  • He has a blood clot at the end of one of IV PICC line sites. Pray it continues to break up and they can take him off blood thinners.

  • There’s much that needs to happen before, but please pray that Kaleb will be able to breastfeed down the road. That’s a great desire of Brittany’s heart. And it sounds like it could actually be a possibility.

  • For continued perseverance for us and sleep.

  • As thanksgiving approaches, we have so much to thank God for. Please join us in praising and thanking God for all He has done for us and our boy.

  • As our time in the CICU draws to a close, please pray for more opportunities to share the hope of Christ with the staff we have come to love.

Thank you all so much for your perseverance in prayer on our behalf! It has been incredible to see the Lord providing for us through your prayers.

Love,
The Born Family
