Weekend Update #19: Closing His Chest Today
Happy Monday!
This weekend Kaleb started to show little glimpses of progress, according to the medical staff, Saturday and Sunday were his best two days post surgery.
They did another echo of his heart on Saturday and for the most part his ventricles and 2 valves haven’t changed from the severe dysfunction and backflow. However one ventricle and one valve showed minimal improvement! We are so grateful to the LORD for these minimal improvements.
During this extended period of heavy sedation post-surgery, the staff do something called a “paralytic holiday”, temporarily taking him off his paralytic medication (morphine in his case) just to see how he responds, like seeing his arms and legs move. We were able to be there one afternoon for this and we were able to see Kaleb close his mouth, wiggle his fingers, and stretch his toes. To be able to be in the room for these small glimpses of life brought joy to our hearts.
Signs of Healing Post-Surgery
They have been able to get him to where they want him with body fluid levels, bringing down his vent settings, and bringing down several medications. They also had him on two different heart pacers but now his heart is only on one. These sings of progress he is showing gives them the confidence to go ahead and close up his chest.
They will be closing his chest today (Monday, Oct 28) around 10-11am (ET).
Pray with us:
This next 24 hours, post-chest closure is expected to be a rough time for him. Pray Kaleb’s heart and lungs adjust well during this time.
Pray for his left and right ventricles to adjust and strengthen.
Pray for his mitral and tricuspid valve repairs, the repairs would take hold and the back-flow would keep reducing.
Love,
The Born Family
